Why Everyone Needs To Donate To Poor Children In Africa

By Barbara Williams

The vast African continent continues to be home to the poorest, most wretched, most desperate people in the world. Millions starve to death each year. Millions more die from diseases that could be treated very successfully if only some medical facilities were available. It is especially the plight of innocent kids that truly needs much more attention from the rest of the world. It is the responsibility of everyone that lead more privileged lives to donate to poor children in Africa.

Very few people can claim that they are not aware of the misery suffered by African kids every day. Images of suffering, hungry, ill and abused kids are printed and broadcast on almost a daily basis. Sadly, so many people view such images and stories of little more than passing interest. It is happening very far away and it has nothing to do with them. At least, this is what they tell themselves.

Not everybody is untouched. There are many people that do everything that they can. Celebrities have held concerts and performances and European royalty has clearly demonstrate their willingness to get their own hands dirty. These people should be applauded, but much more needs to be done if a future is to be created for millions of African kids living without help and without hope.

It is unfortunate that so many people fail to become involved because they think that their own small efforts will not make any difference. Nothing can be further from the truth. Millions of small effort is almost always more sustainable and effective that one or two very big efforts. Western society, especially, is extremely wasteful and the vast majority of people truly can afford to offer some form of help.

Making regular donations, even small ones, towards helping the African kids is one of the most convenient ways in which to help. It is important, however, to make donations only to organizations that are reputable and that have a proven track record for honesty and efficiency. It is unfortunate that millions of dollars have disappeared due to poor management and opportunist organizations that see charities as lucrative businesses.

Another excellent way in which to make a real difference is to become involved on a personal level. There are several organizations that run educational programs, health facilities and projects that aim to provide water, sanitation and housing to those poorest of the poor. Young people can volunteer to offer their skills and their labour to make a real and visible change.

Not everyone can give money or travel to the continent. This does not mean that they cannot contribute, however. Anyone can help collecting clothes and food for distribution by bigger aid organizations. Everybody can make sure that their colleagues, family and friends remain aware of the catastrophe on the African continent. Even such small contributions are valuable and the most certainly help.

What happens on the African continent is important to the entire global community. Global warming, for example, affects everybody. Disease can spread from one continent to another in the blink of an eye. The African kids deserve help.

Providing Food And Education For Poor Children

By Kathleen Reed

Helping the poor is something everyone should do. Children deserve compassionate aid from the community around them. Fortunately, many people enjoy helping. It's best when private individuals or groups help, since aid is not diluted by passing through a government agency. The personal touch is also valuable; relationships can be formed that may last long after a child no longer needs food and education for poor children.

Some truly believe that the government should take care of these needs. However, anyone seeing how much money goes into administration and how little real good is achieved for massive expenditure will realize there is a better way. Policies like 'no child left behind' or 'the war on poverty' have cost billions and improved things little if at all.

In contrast, many efforts by churches, civic organizations, businesses, and even public schools do make a difference. These are direct programs, often run by volunteers who require no salary, benefits, or oversight. Donors of goods and services know that what they give gets to the recipients, rather than being wasted on administrative costs.

For instance, churches often collect school supplies before a new year starts, so poorer kids can have what they need. A family can stock a new book bag with all the items on the list for that grade level, or people can bring in a pack of pencils or a notebook. Those who can't afford to give can help deliver the items to the school.

In many areas, department stores place boxes near the door for shoppers to fill with school supplies or packaged groceries, depending on the need. It's easy for most families to donate a box of crayons, a notebook, or a pack of pencils while they are doing their own 'back to school' shopping. People enjoy dropping a box of cake mix or a can of baked beans into the box on their way out of the store.

Some churches and other groups collect cereal and peanut butter to feed children during the summer months, when they can no longer get lunch at school. These popular foods are passed out monthly, letting families know that people care all year round. Schools, stores, and local banks often have canned food drives, where people can donate items for local food banks or other programs. This is a way for people to help others just a little at a time. When enough individual donations are put together, a lot of people can be helped.

There are lots of opportunities in the area of education besides giving school supplies. People can offer free tutoring to students of all levels. Local business professionals may speak at schools or teach at community colleges. Businesses can offer internships or summer programs to introduce high school kids to the world of law, finance, or retail.

If you care, you can find a way to help. In your area, you will have civic organizations that buy eyeglasses for school kids, food banks that need volunteers, teams that need coaches, and after-school programs that need helpers or directors. Professionals can teach at a community college or speak at 'career day' at the high school. Commend stores or scout troops that collect packaged food or school supplies. Never pass up the opportunity to help a poor child get ahead.
