Rotary International And Its History

By Ronald I B Ibettson

Aimed at connecting business and professional leaders, Rotary International is a membership organization that is committed to service, the development of better relationships and the advancement of the community. People who become members are expected to adhere to a strict standard of personal and professional ethics, as the duty of service is perceived as taking precedence over self. Because this organization is a secular one, it does not discriminate based upon age, religion, gender or race.

Although membership is, ultimately, by invitation all interested individuals who have something worthy to contribute can apply. Rotary clubs are open to people of all cultures and ethnicities and are not affiliated with any political or religious organizations.

Rotary clubs have in excess of 1.2 million worldwide members. Those who are members will usually host weekly social gatherings for their clubs. These are simple gatherings such as breakfast meetings or dinner and lunch meetings where club activities and future goals are discussed. Club members can meet in public arenas, however, these events can also be hosted at club lodges. Rotarian's offer scholarships as well as exchanges, programs for promoting increased literacy and various other activities and useful resources for enriching the community.

High ethical standards are valued and promoted in business and all professional endeavors. Members recognize this as being away to further promote peace and health. They also value professions that supply worthiness to others.

Another area in which Rotarian's are service oriented is in the establishment of better international understanding, peace and unity. This is often accomplished through networking between professionals throughout various world chapters. Every participant is ultimately united in service ideals.

Rotary International maintains its headquarters in Evanston, Illinois. It was formed in 1905 and has many branches in different countries throughout the world and numerous official languages. Paul P. Harris was the founder.
